Mount Kanchenjunga is the third highest peak in the world measuring 8,586m (28,169 ft). It falls in the eastern section of the Himalayas known to be Kanchenjunga Himal. This fabulous range lies between Nepal and Sikkim that includes five major peaks in total. Three of them (Main, Central, and South) fall on the border while the rest two (West and Kangbachen) in Nepal.
Many might not know that until 1852, people assumed Kanchenjunga to be the highest peak in the world. Later on, after several surveys and calculations, it was announced to be the third-highest after Mt. Everest and K2.

Standing at its top point would be a lifetime achievement and a feat any adventurer would love to achieve. This magnificent mountain was first climbed by Joe Brown and George Band on 25th May 1955. They were part of the 1995 British Kanchenjunga expedition. The story of their success includes Chogyal. The Chogyal were the monarchs of the former kingdoms of Sikkim and Ladakh. These ancient ‘righteous rulers’ suggested the climber the stopping points before they began summiting. And the information remained intact that even today’s climbers and climbing groups follow this tradition.
More about the Tibetan name “Kanchenjunga” is, we can split them into ‘Kanchen’ and ‘Dzonga’. They are a pure translation of ‘The five treasures of the Great Snows’. It resembles the five peaks of Kanchenjunga with five precious repositories of God; gold, silver, gems, grain, and holy books.
